Newsletter May 2009
30 lots were auctioned raising a total of £5,835, which was as good as last year’s figure. This year we reverted to sealed bids which worked well. The Club is extremely grateful for all the donors and bidders who make this such a valuable contribution to Club funds.
The second Winter Talk, ‘The River Wandle: Past, Present and Future’ was given by Will Tall of the Wandle Trust. This was a very topical talk and popular too – 41 attended.
West Country Dinner
The eighth West Country dinner took place at the Arundell Arms on 13th March. Anne Voss- Bark was our Guest of Honour for the third year running. The 14 who attended once again enjoyed the delicious food and the specially selected wines for the evening. The whole experience was yet again a great advertisement for the Hotel.
19 attended the April sale which had 34 lots and raised £670. In spite of the low numbers it was a most enjoyable evening with a particularly delicious dinner.
Young Members Dinners
The first of four Young Members Dinners was held on 15th April. These have now become a regular fixture. James Kalbassi deserves special thanks for organising them. The programme will continue with dinners every 3 months.

Can members please let the Secretary know whether they intend to stay on for the barbecue after the AGM so that he can advise the Savile of the numbers – ladies and friends will be most welcome at the barbecue (last year 37 attended and it was a great success). Cost will be in the region of £40 per head. The Annual Report and Accounts for 2008 are enclosed.
International Fario Club Weekend in Paris
The Fario Club has invited the Flyfishers to join them in Paris for the weekend of 18th to 20th September. The weekend will follow the same pattern as the last one held there in 2006 (see the Winter Journal of 2006, article on page 43 by the Secretary). The events include a concert (voluntary) on Friday evening, a lunch at a chosen bistro at 1pm on the Saturday and a guided visit to one of the old parts of Paris that afternoon. There will then be a dinner in the evening. The final day will include a casting competition in the private club ‘Tir aux Pigeons’ in the Bois de Bologne on Sunday. The centennial of the first Casting Club de France’s fly and weight casting competition will also be taking place. Travel is normally by Eurostar. Anyone interested in attending please get in touch with the Secretary. Depending on demand numbers may have to be restricted
The Club has a total membership of around 600 and this figure is reasonably steady. However the long term future of the Club requires a healthy flow of members joining so if you know some kindred fishermen who would appreciate the unique fellowship of our Club please do not hang back in suggesting membership.
Ladies in the Club
Ladies are extremely welcome in the Club for almost all the times the Club is open. The one exception is lunch. They can have coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon and are particularly welcome in the evening. If a member wishes to bring a lady for lunch then he must book a table with the Savile (020 7629 5462). Dinner parties in the Club’s Dining Room (a minimum of 4 people) are encouraged and are a very popular way of entertaining in the West End
The Savile Club and The Flyfishers’ will close from 3pm on Friday 31st July until 11am on Tuesday 1st September. Reciprocal clubs offering hospitality will be posted on the Club’s notice board during June.
