A printed copy has also been sent by post to everyone, along with the AGM papers.

The rain has stopped, the rivers have filled up and the sun is out – fishing has started.

Club Dining

Please note that the Club is open in the evening, as well as at lunchtime, for drinks and dinner. The same format as lunch times applies and Members are encouraged to drop in any weekday evening. If you find the Club has been pre-booked for a private party, you are most welcome to use the Savile Dining Room.

Summer Lunch Party – Sunday 17th June

This year the Summer Party coincides with Fathers’ Day. An ideal way to celebrate the day would be to come along to Chilland House, Martyr Worthy, Hants in the Itchen Valley. This is always a splendid, informal event and is by kind permission of Andrew and Katherine Impey. Lunch will be served at 1pm and you are welcome to arrive any time from Noon onwards. Applications are now being invited.

City of London InterClub Shooting Competition

Forclip_image002 those who fancy a break from fishing, the Club has been invited again to field a team of 4 guns to take part in the above competition. This will be held on Thursday 5th July at Holland & Holland’s grounds in Ruislip. It is a lovely event with shooting in the afternoon, followed by canapés & champagne, a flush and then dinner. Those of you who would like to take part please email me- I am 2 guns short.

Work continues on keeping our website updated and hopefully it is becoming a useful reference point for Members. Recent updates include the Library section, which David Beazley has been working on. He has also put up a list of ‘wanted’ books for the library. This has already produced one of them, so please cast your eyes over the list and see if you can spare a copy for the Library.

Fishing Offers and discounts from Fishing Suppliers

The General Committee have been hard at work negotiating some generous discounts from various suppliers for the Members of the Club. We will create a separate section on the website where these will be listed and links set up to the various suppliers. It will be up to you if you wish to take any of these up and, if you wish, to leave your contact details with them. The Club will not pass on any of your details to these suppliers without your express permission.

This section will also contain any fishing offers. Again it will be up to you to check the website and to follow up on any offer. If you would like to place an offer please email details to me.

Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 3rd July at 6pm

The papers for the AGM are included and this will be followed by the popular BBQ on the Savile’s Terrace. Please let me know if you intend to come. All guests are most welcome at the BBQ. Ticket price is £52, which will include food and drinks. Application form is included.

Derbyshire Dinner

The third Derbyshire Dinner is planned on Thursday 6th September back at Hassop Hall Hotel near Bakewell. This will follow the pattern of the West Country and ladies are most welcome to attend. The room we shall dine in has been the venue for the dinners of the Cressbrook and Litton Flyfishers Club and the standard of the hotel’s food and service has always been very high. There is space for up to 50 members and guests and the charge will be around £65 per head. There may be a chance to fish locally the following day, but this will be limited and dependent on availability. This year we have been able to persuade Dr John Smith to speak after dinner on the subject of ‘Edited Highlights of the Medical Hazards of Fly Fishing’. Application form is included. Accommodation should be booked direct with Hassop Hall on 01629 640 488.

Young Members’ Events

Two very successful ‘Screening Evenings’ have now been held. The evening starts with canapés and drinks in the Savile bar, a showing of a fishing film in the Savile’s screening room and then dinner upstairs. James Kalbassi, who organises these dinners, will be delighted to hear from any Members under 40 who have not registered with him but would be interested in attending the next evening. Please email the Club.

Rocky Mountain USA, Dinner in September 2012

Two of our Members living in the USA have organised a Flyfishers’ Club Dinner in September in Denver, Colorado. Contact G. William Fowler  or Gordon Wickstrom via the Club, if you are interested.

The Club’s first Stateside dinner will be held Thursday 13th September, 2012 at The Brown
Palace Hotel, Denver, Colorado. An Italian Renaissance style hotel that opened in 1892, it will provide an elegant setting for the dinner. The dinner will be black tie. Ladies and guest are welcome. Hotel accommodation should be booked directly with The Brown Palace Hotel (www.brownpalace.com). A block of rooms have been reserved under “London Flyfishers’ Club”.

clip_image004Anders Halverson, Ph.D, author of ‘An Entirely Synthetic Fish, How Rainbow Trout Beguiled America and Overran the World’, will be the guest speaker and the charge will be around £75 per head.

Fishing on America’s famous South Platte River on either private or public waters can be arranged either before or after the dinner. Book directly with Pat Dorsey, The Blue Quill Angler (patd@bluequillangler.com). Private lodging for your time on the river can also be booked through the guide service.

Fly Tying Classes – October to March 2013

clip_image006Peter Lapsley has kindly offered to hold another series of six trout fly tying classes. These will be held on Monday 15th October and thereafter on the second Monday in November (12th), December (10th), January (14th), February (11th) and March (18th). It is preferred that you attend all six as they are structured to develop your skills month by month. Peter has designed it so the Members progress throughout the course. Sandwiches are provided each time and an initial charge of £60 will be made to cover the cost of these.

The course is structured and progressive. Its aim is not to teach participants to tie a limited range of flies but to teach the techniques needed in order to be able to try your hands at any trout or sea trout fly for which you have the recipe (we do not include salmon flies on the course).

During last winter, we had six people to start with but one dropped out due to other pressures. As the course was oversubscribed last time, and to be fair to everyone, the following guidelines are suggested:

All participants should

· either be true beginners or, at least, have done very little fly-tying in the past;

· be able to commit to attending each session unless prevented by illness;

· be prepared to do a bit of ‘homework’ between sessions – not much; just enough to keep one’s hand in;

· be prepared to buy his own (quite basic) set of tools and materials – Peter will provide a list of what is needed and useful suppliers.

Those interested should email the Club

clip_image008Autumn Rummage Sale – Tuesday 25th September

We now have a date and even some lots. However we need more. Please keep them coming in and ensure that you leave any lots with me by 7th September.

The format will change slightly and we will introduce reserves for some items. I will also circulate a list of lots offered in advance of the evening to allow Members who are unable to attend to place absentee bids.

Just to remind you, the Club will take a commission of 15% (plus VAT) and the balance will be sent to the donor.

August Holidays

The Club will close as usual from Monday 30th July to Monday 27th August. However the Savile will remain open all through the month and you are most welcome to make full use of their dining room for lunch and dinner. We have also been offered hospitality with a limited number of the other London Clubs over August. Please contact me for details.

This year the closure will overlap the Olympics (27th July to 12th August). London will be particularly busy and there will be a number of traffic diversions in place. If you are intending to visit the Club, it would be prudent to factor this in and check transport connections before leaving home.

Club Cufflinks

As a result of the ever increasing price of gold, the Club has commissioned some cufflinks made in silver. These feature the Club’s crest and a T bar fastener. They are available at £130.

Please let me know if you would like a set. clip_image010

The gold cufflinks are still available at £550.

Mayfly Weekend

clip_image012Once again, the generosity of the Members has been overwhelming and as a result of this we have been offered Mayfly fishing on the Avon, Itchen, and Test over the prime weekends of the season. Many thanks to those of you who have been willing to give the Club access to your own fishing beats.

This year 20 of the younger members of the Club enjoyed two weekends of splendid fishing.

Email reminder

Many thanks to those of you who have now given me their email address. If there are still some of you who have not yet done so but would like to receive updates by email, please could you send me an email to the Club’s address.
