NEWSLETTER ~ September 2012

We didn’t need the Newscaster, as he did the other night, to tell us that June and July had been the wettest two months all year and indeed for a number of years. Thankfully the Olympics enjoyed excellent weather and what a fabulous effort from everyone in Team GB, which has carried on in the Paralympics. The Jubilee celebrations were not so lucky with the weather, however, this didn’t detract from all the wonderful events and celebrations that took place.

Life returns to normality at the Club, and I look forward to seeing you here in the near future. Game is back on the menu and there are some new wines on the list for you to sample.

Annual General Meeting

At the AGM in July, Anthony Edwards (seen right) was re-elected as our President.

clip_image002Three members of the General Committee, David M.E.I. Edsell, Stephen R. Hodges and Morgan H. Jones , stepped down having completed their terms; Edward J. Davies, James R. Kalbassi and Theo W. Pike were all elected as new Committee members.

David Beazley was re-elected as Librarian, John Morgan was re-elected as Curator and Archivist and Peter Lapsley was re-elected as Editor of the Flyfishers’ Journal.

In recognition of Peter’s immense contribution to the Club over his years as Editor, he has been made an Honorary Life Member of the Club.

Following the meeting, the Club’s traditional BBQ was attended by 50 Members and guests.

Autumn Rummage Sale – Tuesday 25th Septemberclip_image004

The application form is included. This time a list of the lots will be available before to the auction, by email, and commission bids will be accepted. Some items will also have reserves.

Just to remind you, the Club will take a commission of 15% (plus VAT) and the balance will be sent to the donor.

Founders’ Fund

You will see a separate letter from the President about the creation of a Founders’ Fund that will allow our fine Club to continue to prosper for many years to come and to provide enjoyment to future generations of Flyfishers. I do hope that you will give serious consideration to supporting this initiative.

Young Members’ Events – Wednesday 10th October

The next screening, ‘Himalayan Trout’, and dinner will be on Wednesday 10th October, so please put the date aside. James Kalbassi, who organises these dinners, will be in touch. If there are any Members under 40 who have not yet registered, you are encouraged to do so with James (jkalbassi AT paragonbrokers.com).

Annual Dinner – Thursday 8th November

We shall return to the Savoy Hotel for our 78th consecutive Dinner there and the 116th Annual Dinner on Thursday 8th November. Our Guest of Honour will be The Rt. Hon Sir Jeremy Hanley, KCMG. Applications are now being accepted.

You will note that the date has been moved and hopefully this no longer clashes with Half-Term. Please support this event. Many Members find it a most convenient way to repay any fishing invitations that they have enjoyed over the season. This year we have persuaded the Savoy to include pre-dinner drinks within the total cost.

Private Dinners or Cocktail Parties

I’m pleased to say that bookings for private dinner parties are on the increase.

clip_image006For dinners, the table will seat up to 14 comfortably, or 16 at a push. The Club makes a charge of £12 per head up to a maximum of £114 (VAT inclusive) and you will be asked to select your menu and wines from the Savile’s list. It makes an ideal setting for any anniversaries, birthdays or even business dinners. There is no minimum number.

If you would like to hold a cocktail party instead, then up to 50 guests may be invited.

To enable you to make full use of the Club, we can move the table in the Dining Room to give you more space. The charge for use of the Club is £114 (VAT inclusive) plus your selection of canapés and drinks.

Christmas Lunch – Thursday 13th December

Following on from the success of last year’s event we shall hold another Christmas Lunch on Thursday 13th December. This will still allow Members to gather before Christmas, and the feeling is that a lunch may also be a more convenient time for those who don’t reside in London.

Drinks will be served in the Club from noon and a traditional lunch will then be served in the Savile Ballroom at 1pm. Applications are now being accepted.

Winter Talks 2013

A full programme of talks is being arranged. The dates are Wednesday 23rd January, Wednesday 20th February and Wednesday 20th March. Please put these in your diaries. We shall have a talk on fishing in Canada, a talk from the Atlantic Salmon Trust on the excellent work that they do and we have also arranged for a tour of Fishmongers’ Hall, followed by dinner there.

Full details and booking forms will be sent out in December.

Club Dining

Please note that the Club is open in the evening, as well as at lunchtime, for drinks and dinner. The same format as lunchtimes applies and Members are encouraged to drop in any weekday evening. If you find the Club has been pre-booked for a private party, you are most welcome to use the Savile Dining Room.

clip_image010Summer Lunch Party – Sunday 17th June

Our grateful thanks to Andrew and Katherine Impey for allowing us to hold our Summer Party at Chilland House, Martyr Worthy. They were even able to arrange one of the few dry days for the event. On a sunny day 70 Members and guests gathered to enjoy good food, wine and company.

Work continues on keeping our website updated and hopefully it is becoming a useful reference point for Members. Recent updates include the Library section, which David Beazley has been working on. He has also put up a list of ‘wanted’ books for the library. This has already produced a couple of responses, so please cast your eyes over the list and see if you can spare a copy for the Library. If you have not yet registered then I urge you to do so at www.flyfishersclub.org.uk.

Club Cufflinks

clip_image012As a result of the ever-increasing price of gold, the Club has commissioned some cufflinks made in silver. These feature the Club’s crest and a T bar fastener. They are available at £130.

Please let me know if you would like a set.

The gold cufflinks are still available at £550.

Email reminder

Many thanks to those of you who have now given me their email address. If there are still some of you who have not yet done so but would like to receive updates by email, please could you send me an email to the Club’s address (shown above).

  1. Although I had already read the newsletter (in its print form, which arrived a week or two ago), I was very impressed with the smooth transition from print to digital media — both the quality and the easy readability.

Kudos to the webmaster. The site just gets better and better!
